The Children of Promise and Abraham's Family

The Children of Promise

In the bible, the people of God have been given various titles. Amongst those titles, there is the title ‘children of promise’. The reason why the people of God are called the children of promise is because the people of God have been given a promise by God before their birth. Then, how do we receive this promise to fulfil the title ‘children of promise’?

Galatians 4:28 Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.

The people of God are called the children of promise just like Isaac because like Isaac who was given a promise before his birth, we too, have been given a promise by God. Then, what is that promise?

1 John 2:25 And this is what he promised us – eternal life.

God has promised eternal life to the children of promise. To understand further how to receive this promised eternal inheritance, let us look through the brief history of Abraham’s family.

The Children of Promise like Isaac

Galatians 3:29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Prophetically Abraham represents God the Father, therefore those who are the heirs of Abraham are prophetically the heirs of God who will inherit His promise.

Genesis 17:18-19 And Abraham said to God ” If only Ishmael might live under your blessing !” Then God said “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

Although Ishmael was fourteen years older than Isaac and was Abraham’s first-born son he was not the heir God had selected to inherit Abraham’s estate. However, it was Isaac who inherited his father’s estate. What was the defining factor between Ishmael and Isaac?

When we look back at the verse of Genesis Chapter 17 verses 18-19, God said to Abraham that the child born through Sarah is the child who will inherit his estate and the child with whom He will establish his covenant. Thus, Isaac became the heir of Abraham. Although Ishmael was the firstborn son (Genesis 16:15) the determining factor for who would become the heir was not the paternal line but the maternal line. Consequently, Isaac could inherit Abraham’s estate because of his mother, Sarah.

The Children of Promise are The Children of Mother

To become the children of promise, we must become the children of mother.

Galatians 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.

The children of God have their Mother who is Jerusalem the free woman.

Galatians 4:28 Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.

Apostle Paul compared the people of God to Isaac because just as how Isaac was given a promise and inheritance through Sarah his mother, we can only receive the promise of eternal life through Jerusalem our mother.

Galatians 4:30-31 But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

We are the children of the free woman, Jerusalem, She is our Mother who gives us eternal life. Just like Isaac who could only receive his father’s inheritance because he was the son of the free woman Sarah, we are the children of promise only because we have God our Mother who gives eternal life. We can only receive the eternal promised inheritance through Jerusalem our Mother.

We the children of promise can only fulfil our title when we become the children of Mother, God the Mother. Once we become the children of Heavenly Mother we can inherit eternal life from Her and enter the eternal kingdom of Heaven.
